Jackson Pollock: Portfolio : By 1959 at the latest, when Jackson Pollock’s work appeared at documenta II in Kassel, his reputation as the most significant representative of Abstract Expressionism in America was unassailably established. This triumph rested above all on the unquestionable power of the masterpieces of the late 1940s. There can be no doubt that these works took the possibilities of Abstract Expressionism to an extreme, and that Pollock’s huge formats offered a compelling chance for viewers to experience for themselves what he meant by “being in the image.” Like hardly another oeuvre, Pollock’s shaped the definition and understanding of art in the latter half of the twentieth century. It marked an extreme level of subjectivity and a challenge to conventional views of what painting should or could be. It is no coincidence that representatives of the major streams in art in the wake of Abstract Expressionism continually sought solid points of anchorage—be it in figuration as a regulative, be it in a conceptualism that embedded and defined each individual result in terms of some overall strategy. Pollock himself must have sensed that he was pushing the limits of what still could be understood as a painting. One day, curious about Lee Krasner’s opinion of a picture, he did not ask whether she thought it was a good painting or a bad one. He simply asked, “Is this a painting?”
