Dear readers of this amazing sutra, which exists in the world as an actual manifestation of the Buddhas’ compassion for us, The first half is a translation from the Tibetan; the second half is a translation from the Sanskrit. May this bring you the blessings of all the holy texts in both languages! When that font changes, that is when you are beginning the Sanskrit translation. The indented parts appear as verses in the original Sanskrit and Tibetan. Although the verses have not been made beautiful in the English translations as they are in the original, please read them with the understanding that these are all four-lined verses, which the sutra refers to many times. May the kindness of the Buddha, as embodied within this wondrous sutra, fill the hearts of all beings and turn them all to virtue. Just as this Sanghata sutra has existed for many centuries until now in the world only to benefit, may the Buddhadharma remain for aeons more, to bring comfort and aid to all. * Colophon to the translation of the Tibetan into English: This early draft of a translation from Tibetan into English is offered by Ven. Lhundup Damchö as an interim measure to enable the sutra to be recited by as many people as possible quickly. All the mistakes are hers; all that is done well is the result of Geshe Lhundup Sopa’s kindness in reading the first half of the text with her from September 2002 through January 2003 in Madison, Wisconsin. Translation was done using the Taipei edition of the bka’ ’gyur, with some emendations based on the Lhasa and Peiking editions and with reference to the Sanskrit. * Colophon to translation of Sanskrit into English: The translation from Sanskrit to English appears in the unpublished Ph.D. dissertation of the late Sri Lankan scholar R. A. Gunatilaka, submitted to Cambridge University in 1967. A large number of Sanskrit terms left untranslated by Gunatilaka are here translated into English for ease of recitation and comprehension. Other preliminary emendations were made to this translation by Ven. Lhundup Damchö in consultation with the original Sanskrit, in some places correcting for English grammar and punctuation and in others retranslating selected passages.

Originally published in the Sacred Books of the East Series, under the general editorship of F. Max Müller, this volume contains translations of basic works in later Buddhism. These documents are extremely important in contemporary Japanese Buddhism, particularly the older sects, such as the Pure Land and Shin Shu, and have also been significant in the development of Chinese Buddhism, and the Buddhism of Tibet and Nepal. All have been translated from Sanskrit texts that preserve the originals as well as can be determined. The first component, the Buddha-Karita of Asvaghosha, has been translated by E. B. Cowell from Nepalese texts. Of Indian origin, around the beginning of the Christian era, it is concerned with the life and teachings of the Buddha — now quite far removed from the Pali documents of the Hinayana. The original text, which was fragmentary, has been completed by the addition of four books by a nineteenth-century Nepalese scholar, Amritananda. Max Müller has translated the Larger and Smaller Sukhavati-vyuha, in which the Buddha describes the Land of Bliss to an assembly of the sangha, gods, spirits, and others. This is followed by Dr. Müller's translation of the Vagrakkhedika (The Diamond Cutter), a metaphysical treatise, and the Larger and Smaller Pragna — paramitahridaya-sutras, two brief kernel statements of the Mahayana. The final document for Japanese Buddhism, the highly important Amitayur-dhyana-sutra, has been translated by Dr. J. Takakusu. Called the Meditation Sutra, it describes meditation and concentration techniques in terms of Amida Buddhism. It is of particular interest today as an experimental document.

Le Soûtra du dévoilement du sens profond ou Sandhinirmocanasûtra compte parmi les plus importants des soûtras du Grand Véhicule. On le considère en effet comme le texte fondateur de l'un des deux principaux courants philosophiques du Mahâyâna indien, le courant idéaliste du « Rien qu'esprit » qui se développera à partir du IVe siècle sous l'influence des écrits d'Asanga et de Vasubandhu. À la différence des Prajñâpâramitâsûtras radicalement vacuistes comme le Soûtra du Diamant déjà publié dans cette collection, le Soûtra du dévoilement du sens profond met l'accent sur le rôle de la conscience dans la genèse de l'illusion et sur une interprétation plus modérée de la vacuité. Mais il se présente surtout comme un manuel de méditation qui inspirera nombre de pratiquants indiens, chinois et tibétains. Les méditations de la quiétude (shamatha) et de la vision éminente (vipashyanâ) sont ici décrites avec précision, dans leur relation avec le franchissement des Dix Terres que doit parcourir le bodhisattva pour atteindre l'Éveil final d'un bouddha. Quel est donc ce sens profond que le Soûtra prétend dévoiler ? L'intention véritable du Bouddha, c'est-à-dire un enseignement dont le sens définitif permet d'éliminer toute tentation ou tentative d'interprétation nihiliste du bouddhisme. Faisant écho au Soûtra des Dix Terres, le Soûtra du Dévoilement du Sens profond s'inscrit dans la logique d'une collection qui a vocation de faire découvrir aux amateurs de sagesse les fleurons de la pensée et de la mystique bouddhiste. La traduction présentée dans ce volume a été réalisée à partir de la version tibétaine du VIIIe siècle.
