Nāgārjuna's 'Letter To A Friend': Commentary By Venerable Rendawa, Zhön Nu Lo Drö. Nagarjuna's poetic presentation of the fundamental teachings of the Great Vehicle, or Mahayana—whose followers, driven by compassion, strive to attain Buddhahood for the sake of all beings—is remarkable for its concise style and memorable imagery, making it one of the most widely quoted sources in other commentaries on the Mahayana path. This work will appeal to readers with a general interest in Mahayana Buddhism, to those who wish to familiarize themselves with one of the great classics of Indian Buddhist literature, and to students who come across passages quoted in other Buddhist works and who wish to explore further. The great Indian Buddhist master Nagarjuna (first–second century A.D.) wrote his celebrated poem "Letter to a Friend" as a gift of advice to a South Indian king, and it has since become a monument in the Indian shastra tradition. Despite its short length (only 123 verses), it covers the whole Mahayana path, combining a practical approach to daily conduct with a theoretical exposition of the different stages leading to enlightenment. It has thus been an ideal source for many of Tibet 's great scholars seeking a scriptural authority to enhance their own descriptions of the Buddhist path.

Voici la première traduction française du Soûtra de l'Entrée à Lankâ (Lankâvatâra) qui, avec le Soûtra des Dix Terres (Dashabhûmika) et le Soûtra du Dévoilement du sens profond (Sandhinirmocana), forme l'assise scripturaire de ce qu'il est commode mais inexact d'appeler l'«idéalisme bouddhiste». Négation pure et simple des Idées - platoniciennes, cartésiennes ou «modernes» -, cet idéalisme singulier n'est pas le contraire du matérialisme car, s'il ramène effectivement l'être au concept et les choses à la pensée, il n'admet pas non plus la réalité ultime de la conscience ni de tout ce qui entre dans les catégories du spirituel : il s'agit plutôt, comme l'ensemble de la philosophie bouddhiste, d'une dénonciation rationnelle des limites et dangers du réalisme naïf qui semble dominer la pensée humaine. Manuel de réalisation intérieure, le Lankâ décrit la vacuité de la matière, où il ne voit que les représentations, et la vacuité du psychique, lequel peut se ramener à autant d'idées fictives, avant de proposer une méthode contemplative radicale, fondée sur la «nature de bouddha» en tant que «claire lumière naturelle de l'esprit», dont le chan/zen et le tantrisme sont les applications les plus abouties. La présente traduction, réalisée sur la version chinoise de Shikshânanda (702), est agrémentée de quelques indispensables notes que devraient compléter les brillantes remarques de Fazang du Huayan, assistant styliste du traducteur, dans ses Mystères essentiels de l'Entrée à Lankâ, à paraître prochainement.

Fifty Stanzas on the Spiritual Teacher (formerly titled Fifty Stanzas on Guru Devotion) by Aryashura is an indispensable text that deals with how to cultivate the proper relationship between a student and his or her Spiritual Teacher. The Fifty Verses of Guru Devotion [Skt: Gurupancashika; Tib: Lama Nga-chu-pa] was written in about the first century B.C. by Ashvagosha. This Indian poet was known by many names—such as Aryashura, Matriceta, Patriceta, Matichitra, and Bhavideva—and was a contemporary of King Kaniska of the Kusan Dynasty. Having previously been a strong non-Buddhist believer, he became an extremely devout follower of the Buddha’s path and wrote many works on its various aspects.

Some two thousand years ago Buddhism experienced a major reformation through a movement called the Mahayana, or Great Vehicle, which dominated religious thought in much of Asia for many centuries and still exerts considerable influence. The basic Mahayana texts were sermons ascribed to the Buddha, called sutras in Sanskrit. The earliest and most influential of these Mahayana sutras had the perfection of wisdom as its main subject matter. Of these texts, the famous Diamond and Heart sutras have been known in the West for many years, but they are merely condensations of the original Large Sutra on Perfect Wisdom that took shape between 50 and 200 A.D. In the present volume, Dr. Conze offers the result of thirty-five years of close study, and makes available this Large Sutra, the key document for dealing with early Mahayana doctrine. La collection Mélanges Chinois et Bouddhiques (MCB) fut créée sous forme de revue périodique en 1931 par Louis de La Vallée Poussin (1869-1938) qui en resta le moteur jusqu’à son décès. Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, ces Mélanges se transformèrent en une série de monographies sous l’impulsion d’Étienne Lamotte (1903-1983). Hubert Durt (1936-2018) prit ensuite la relève, assumant le poste de rédacteur en chef pendant plus de quarante ans. Aujourd’hui, un comité de rédaction a pris la relève.
