As a result of the altruistic efforts of the Buddha’s deciples his teaching crossed the borders of India and captured the minds and hearts not only of this continent but also of Europe and centuries A.D. one half of the human race was converted to Buddhism which taught his followers the four “noble truths” concerning sufferings the cause of suffering, the destruction of suffering and the way that leads to do away with sorrow.

Tibet Under Communist China - 50 Years

This book gives an exhaustive account of the change of attitude of Beijing to one of its colonies. Earlier communist China looked at Tibet from a geopolitical and security perspective. Now coupled with this enduring imperial reason for staying put in Tibet, an economically vibrant China looks to Tibet as the best source for coastal China’s galloping demand for energy, fuel and water. The devastating impact of this change of attitude toward Tibet is already felt in Tibet as Tibetans, unable to compete with more skilled Chinese settlers, are becoming increasingly marginalised by the forces of globalisation unleashed on the roof of the world. Having lost their country, Tibetans in increasing number are losing their jobs to the Chinese settlers streaming to Tibet to take advantage of the economic boom.

A cultural History of Ladakh is a comprehensive account of the history and culture of this remote Himalayan region, once known as Western Tibet, from the earliest times to the present. The author discusses the arrival of Buddhism to the region, the growth of the Ladakhi Kingdom, its relations with neighboring Buddhist states and its eventual incorporation into Jammu and Kashmir State. Throughout the book Nawang Tsering Shakspo draws on local histories and biographies to illustrate the larger historical trends. The second half of the book is devoted to Ladakh's rich cultural heritage: its songs, dances and folk customs. It concludes with a discussion of the future of Ladakh, which is undergoing a tremendous transformation. This is a unique book written by one of Ladakh's foremost scholars.

The buddhadharma is the teaching of the awakened state of mind. Buddha means “awakened one.” Dharma means, in this case, “law,” or “teaching,” or “norm.” So we could say buddhadharma is both the “teaching of the awakened one” and the “norm of the awakened one.” It is a path of training that arouses the awakened state of mind, that brings enlightenment. At the same time the norm of the awakened state of mind is present all along, throughout the path. The path develops through ever greater levels of commitment. There are three main stages, known as the three yanas – hinayana, mahayana, and vajrayana, or tantra, and all three are indispensible. The hinayana brings the realization of the basic teachings of Buddha, the acknowledgement of suffering arising from the defensive struggle of ego. The mahayana brings the understanding of suffering, and experience in general, as the working basis for communication. The vajrayana brings total directness, in which the illusion of duality has been utterly seen through, and even the sense of a spiritual journey has fallen away. Corresponding to the three yanas are three vows, formal expressions of transcending hesitation. The first, connected with the hinayana, is the refuge vow: taking refuge in the Buddha, the dharma, and the sangha – the three jewels. At a further state in practice, on the level of mahayana, the student has the opportunity to take the boshisattva vow, the vow to value the welfare of others above his or her own. In the culminating stage of the practice, on the level of tantra, there is the samaya vow of total devotion and surrender to the guru as the embodiment of the awakened state of mind. In ensuing pages are presented the teachings of Chogyam Trungpa, Rinpoche, on the vows of the first two stages, the refuge and bodhisattva vows. The two articles are taken almost entirely from Rinpoche’s many talks accompanying actual vow ceremonies. (from the Introduction)

Yaksa In Hinduism And Buddhism : The disguises of the demon

Sutherland Gail Hinich

Among the most ancient deities of South Asia, the yaksstraddles the boundaries between popular and textual traditions in both Hinduism and Buddhism and both benevolent and malevolent facets. As a figure of material plenty, the yaksis epitomized as Kubera, god of wealth and king of the yaks In demonic guise, the yaksis related to a large family of demonic and quasi-demonic beings, such as nagas, gandharvas, raksand the man-eating pisaacas. Translating and interpreting texts and passages from the Vedic literature, the Hindu epics, the Puranas, Kalidasa's Meghaduta, and the Buddhist Jataka Tales, Sutherland traces the development and transformation of the elusive yaksfrom an early identification with the impersonal absolute itself to a progressively more demonic and diminished terrestrial characterization. Her investigation is set within the framework of a larger inquiry into the nature of evil, misfortune, and causation in Indian myth and religion.

Gedun Choephel

Gedun Choephel, one of the most progressive Tibetan scholars of t his century, was born in Rekong, Amdo province in 1905. As a youth he studied at Tashi Khyil monastery. In Amdo and later at the monastic university of Drepung near Lhasa. An exceptionally gifted and often controversial figure, he was at once a scholar, historian, literary innovator, translator, artist, poet, musician and traveller. He visited both lndia and Ceylon and developed highly nationalistic aspirations for Tibet. He passed away in Lhasa in 1951. His unfinished "White Annals" is unique in Tibetan historical writing in that it presents a highly critical and intelligent appraisal of the very early period of Tibetan history, dealing simultaneously with historical and cultural developments. This English translation provides a valuable perspective on the earliest proofs of Tibet's independent status, especially in light of more recent claims to its sovereignty.
