Tendzin Tcheudrak, l'un des maîtres les plus éminents de la tradition médicale tibétaine, a quitté définitivement son Tibet natal en 1980. Marpa, qui vécut au Tibet au XIe siècle, est surtout célèbre pour avoir été le maître de Milarépa. Au-delà de cette notoriété se dessinant dans le miroir de la gloire de son disciple, il mérite pourtant d’être connu pour lui-même : pour sa personnalité exceptionnelle, pour le rôle qu’il a joué dans l’introduction du bouddhisme au Tibet et pour l’héritage qu’il a laissé. "Ayya Khema (1923-1997) was the first Western woman to be ordained a Theravadin Buddhist nun. As such, she has served as a model and inspiration for women from all the Buddhist traditions who have sought to revive the practice of women's monasticism. Born Ilse Kussel in Berlin, Germany, she grew up in a prosperous Jewish family that was broken up by the Nazis in 1938. Fleeing first to Scotland, she then journeyed to rejoin her family in China, where she spent several years, surviving the Japanese invasion. But this was only the beginning. Her later adventures included - but were not limited to - living the life of a suburban housewife in Los Angeles, California; traveling up the Amazon; building a power plant in Pakistan; and establishing the first organic farm in Australia. Her encounters with meditation masters in India led to her formal pursuit of the spiritual life in her forties, culminating in her monastic ordination at the age of fifty-eight. Ayya Khema founded a monastery, the "Nun's Island" in Sri Lanka, and eventually returned to her homeland to found the Buddha-Haus im Allgau center near Munich, Germany, where she died in 1997."

Arya Asanga, l'un des deux piliers du mahayana (grand véhicule), contribua de façon extraordinaire au développement du bouddhisme. Né en Inde, dans l'actuel Cachemire au IVème siècle après J.C., ce philosophe qui partageait les vues philosophique madhyamika du premier pilier, Nagarjuna, est pourtant l'auteur des traités fondateurs d'un autre système que le sien : celui de la philosophie bouddhiste idéaliste, cittamatra. Son oeuvre est ici illustrée par deux courtes biographies, extraites des deux principales annales composées au Tibet sur la vie des grands Maîtres Indiens : - La Source de tous les désirs qui expose comment se répandit au pays des Arya le précieux Dharma, par Jetsun Taranatha Kunga Nyingpo (1575-1634) - L'histoire du bouddhisme en Inde et au Tibet, par le grand érudit Bouteun Rimpotché (1290-1364). Ces deux récits soulignent les qualités exceptionnelles d'Asanga. Il est notamment célèbre pour la persévérance dont il fit preuve dans sa recherche de la connaissance, au point que plus de quinze siècles après sa disparition, il demeure un modèle très actuel de courage et de détermination.

Ermite, poète, érudit, Dilgo Khyentsé Rinpoché (1910-1991) fut un grand maître du bouddhisme Vajrayana. Pendant les dernières années de sa vie, Matthieu Ricard a vécu aux côtés de ce grand maître en tant que disciple et assistant. Ce livre, récit d'une vie passionnante, entrecoupé de textes du maître et d'autres enseignements, nous offre un portrait de celui qui fut, avec le Dalaï-lama, un des grands guides spirituels du bouddhisme tibétain au XXe siècle. Ce récit biographique est ponctué des photographies réalisées par Matthieu Ricard au Tibet et au Népal lorsqu'il était auprès de Dilgo Khyentsé Rinpoché. Cet ouvrage est une refonte et remise à jour du livre L'Esprit du Tibet publié en 1996. Matthieu Ricard a tenu à ajouter quelques nouvelles images au livre, notamment celle de Ourgien Jigmé Tendzin Lhundroup qui a été reconnu comme la réincarnation de Dilgo Khyentsé.
