Why Don't You Get a Horse, Sam Adams? : A brief biography of Samuel Adams describing his activities in stirring up the revolt against the British and how he was finally persuaded to learn to ride a horse. In early America, when all the men wore ruffled shirts and rode grandly on horseback, one man refused to follow suit. He was the rebel leader Sam Adams, a plainspoken gent who scorned ruffles, refused to ride a horse, and had little regard for the King. This lively biography is a nice, personal look at a leader and his times.

Ramona , Ramona and her Mother : Beverly Cleary has given books to each member of the Quimby household except Mrs. Quimby. Now she gets her turn at last in a story that hits the high and low points of a working mother's life as seen from Ramona's seven-and-a-half-year-old viewpoint. Inevitably domestic tensions, not without their amusing side, occasionally arise. Mr. and Mrs. Quimby sometimes forget who is to do what, as when the Crock-Pot is not plugged in and dinner remains uncooked. Beezus acquires a ludicrous teased hairdo at the student body shop while Ramona gets a becoming pixie haircut. Ramona, who feels unloved, takes to twitching her nose like a rabbit in a cozy picture book until her teacher becomes concerned that something is making her nervous.

Madeline Says Merci ! : The spunky French schoolgirl has been transformed into a mini "Miss Manners" in this story by the grandson of Ludwig Bemelmans. As she wends her way through the streets of Paris, Madeline spreads a message of kindness and good behavior despite the occasional pillow fight and spilled juice. Is this the same child who dared to say, "Pooh-Pooh" to a tiger at the zoo? The pencil-and-gouache illustrations, reminiscent of the earlier books, suggest that that impish Parisian is still alive and well. While the rhyming text is a litany of all the ways to be very good, some of the verses are a bit awkward. However, the playful illustrations should draw a smile. This is not a new or particularly exciting adventure, but for those who wish to encourage a discussion of manners in a slightly humorous way, Madeline may be a helpful vehicle.
