Une surprise attend les enfants : une vieille dame, une charmeuse de pigeons. Elle est très gentille et va inspirer à Manon une bonne blague, ainsi qu'un échange ville-campagne très sérieux.

C'est tout naturellement que Dorothée Noyon, documentaliste au lycée français de San Francisco, s'est adressée au fils d'une de ses collègues, un dessinateur protéiforme, pour illustrer cette anecdote dont son frère agriculteur avait été le héros au jardin du Luxembourg. Elle dédie l'album à sa petite-nièce Manon, pour lui dire que les liens résistent au temps et à la distance.

Arthur Le Diouris dessine depuis qu'il a six ans et, au cours de ses études et de ses premiers travaux d'infographiste et de graphiste publicitaire, le dessin lui manquait : «Faire des étiquettes, bof !» résume-t-il. Aussi, quand Dorothée lui a proposé d'illustrer son texte, Arthur a saisi sa chance. Le jour où l'école des loisirs a répondu à leur courrier, il a cru à une blague - car il a des copains blagueurs - mais c'était la vérité toute crue : ils allaient être publiés !
