Le capitaine O’Murphy raconte aux buveurs d’une taverne son extraordinaire rencontre, lors d’un périple en mer, avec l’homme bonsaï, cette créature mi-homme, mi-arbre au destin tragique. Lors d’un voyage en mer, deux cents ans plus tôt, Amédée le potier fut enrôlé de force sur le navire du capitaine Stroke. Devenu son souffre-douleur, Amédée est finalement abandonné sur une île déserte. Sur cette île, il sent une graine lui tomber sur la tête. Très lentement, il sent qu’il est en train de se transformer en arbre… Recueilli par des pirates chinois, il est soigné, et devient leur arme la plus meurtrière. Un jour, Amédée devenu homme bonsaï reconnaît le pavillon du capitaine Stroke. Sa vengeance est terrible. Mais les Chinois abandonnent ensuite en pleine mer, à son triste sort, l’homme devenu arbre. Aussi, lorsqu’il croise le capitaine O’Murphy, Amédée lui demande de mettre fin à ses jours.
