The "Sea of Stories" (a title so reminiscent of the Sanskrit Kathasaritsagara) or "Sutra of the Wise and the Foolish" (i.e., knowing the distinction between wise and foolish things), is the first monument of Tibetan literature to be translated into a Western language, as I.J. Schmidt, the Russo-Dutch scholar of Mongolian, made an edition and German translation of the Tibetan text in 1843 (2 vols.) and also gave close attention to the Mongolian version.
It contains jatakas and avadanas, the birth-stories and hero-stories of the Buddha in former existences told to his circle of disciples to illustrate some religious principle, in reply to their queries. Many of these tales are found in other works of Buddhist literature, though the present sutra is perhaps the most
popular of such collections. The early history of the text goes far back into Central Asia, stemming from early visits by Chinese monks, but for our purposes we may simply regard the Tibetan cycle as the original. It is part of the Kanjur, occurring in volume hu of mDo, amidst other jatakas and avadanas.
Consequently, no apology need be made for issuing this nicely-done English version of such an important work, which has been prepared by Dr. Stanley N. Frye, a graduate of Indiana University with a long-time interest in Tibetan and Mongolian.

The Heart Of Understanding : Commentaries on the Prajnaparamita Heart Sutra

Thich Nhat Hanh

Résumé :
The heart of the Prajñaparamita Sutra is regarded as the essence of Buddhist teaching, offering subtle and profound teachings on non-duality and the letting go of all preconceived notions, opinions, and attachments, and so becoming open to all the wonders of our life.
The Heart Sutra is recited daily in Mahayana temples and practice centers throughout the world. Thich Nhat Hanh’s translation and commentary are the fruit of the author’s more than sixty years of monastic study and practice. He describes the sutra as "a precious gift to us, the gift of fearlessness."
Based on a historic lecture at the Green Gulch Zen Center, Muir Beach, California on April 19, 1987, this is one of the most simple, clear, concise, and understandable commentaries on this very important Buddhist sutra. In the Heart Sutra, the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara describes how to train in the perfection of wisdom by seeing through the illusory nature of all things. The Heart Sutra is Buddhism in a nutshell, containing only 632 characters in the traditional Chinese translation. Despite its brevity, it covers more of the Buddha’s teachings than any other scripture and has had the most profound and wide-reaching influence of any text in Buddhism.

Résumé :
Drawing on the deepest discoveries of the Buddhist tradition, retreat-master Christopher Titmuss urges the reader to transform the forces of desire and dissatisfaction and awaken to the Immeasurable. He gives practical advice on understanding our feelings, taking risks and becoming more detached.
In an awakened life, our hearts are open, steady and purposeful. Most people today have a greater income, as well as more goods and labour - saving devices, than any other generation in history. Yet stress, discontent, personal and social problems abound. Drawing on the deepest discoveries of the Buddhist tradition, well-known retreat master, Christopher Titmuss, suggests we spend far too much time in superficial preoccupaions and not enough in looking deeply into things. He urges us to fearlessly transform the forces of desire and dissatisfaction that haunt our daily lives - and to awaken to the Immeasurable. Inspired by the 20th Century classic, Zend Mind, Beginner's mind, he gives practical advice on such subjects as: understanding our feelings , taking risks, becomming more detached and rediscovering our true selves. And he shows us how to have free, fulfilled and uninhibited lives amidst the frenzy of everyday activity.

I Give You My Life - The Autobiography of Western Buddhist Nun | Livre | Documentaire | 1997 | Français | Auteur : Ayya Khema | Résumé : "Ayya Khema (1923-1997) was the first Western woman to be ordained a Theravadin Buddhist nun. As such, she has served as a model and inspiration for women from all the Buddhist traditions who have sought to revive the practice of women's monasticism. Born Ilse Kussel in Berlin, Germany, she grew up in a prosperous Jewish family that was broken up by the Nazis in 1938. Fleeing first to Scotland, she then journeyed to rejoin her family in China, where she spent several years, surviving the Japanese invasion. But this was only the beginning. Her later adventures included - but were not limited to - living the life of a suburban housewife in Los Angeles, California; traveling up the Amazon; building a power plant in Pakistan; and establishing the first organic farm in Australia. Her encounters with meditation masters in India led to her formal pursuit of the spiritual life in her forties, culminating in her monastic ordination at the age of fifty-eight. Ayya Khema founded a monastery, the "Nun's Island" in Sri Lanka, and eventually returned to her homeland to found the Buddha-Haus im Allgau center near Munich, Germany, where she died in 1997."

Commentary on Nagarjuna's text by Geshe Sonam Rinchen.
Includes translation of Śūnyatāsaptatikārika in English and Tibetan (romanized)
Includes bibliographical references (pages 216-220) and index.
This volume contains a translation of Seventy Stanzas, a fundamental work of Nagarjuna on the Madhyamika system of Buddhist philosophy, along with a commentary on it from the Prasangika viewpoint by Geshe Sonam Rinchen. David Komito summarizes basic Buddhist doctrines on perception and the creation of concepts, which have traditionally served as the backdrop for Nagarjuna's teachings about how people consistently misperceive and misunderstand the nature of the reality in which they live and the means through which they experience it. This book will interest Buddhist practitioners, scholars, and psychologists who seek a deeper understanding of Buddhist psychology and epistemology.
