Swayambhunath (sometimes romanized Swoyambhunath) is an ancient religious complex atop a hill in the Kathmandu Valley, west of Kathmandu city. It is also known as the Monkey Temple as there are holy monkeys living in parts of the temple in the north-west. The Tibetan name for the site means 'Sublime Trees' (Wylie:Phags.pa Shing.kun), for the many varieties of trees found on the hill. However, Shing.kun may be a corruption of the local Newari name for the complex, Singgu, meaning 'self-sprung'.[1] For the Buddhist Newars in whose mythological history and origin myth as well as day-to-day religious practice, Swayambhunath occupies a central position, it is probably the most sacred among Buddhist pilgrimage sites. For Tibetans and followers of Tibetan Buddhism, it second only to Boudhanath.

Il n'est pas rare qu'on associe le mot tibétain bardo à la vie après la mort. Dans ce livre, Chögyam Trungpa traite toutefois du bardo dans une perspective très différente. Ici, le bardo est vu comme summum de l'expérience à tout moment donné. L'expérience que l'on fait du moment présent est toujours colorée par l'un ou l'autre de six états psychologiques. Ces états sont décrits comme autant de mondes : le monde des dieux (béatitude), le monde des dieux jaloux (jalousie et soif de divertissement), le monde humain (passion et désir), le monde animal (ignorance), le monde de fantômes affamés (pauvreté et possessivité) et le monde de l'enfer (agression et haine). En établissement un lien entre ces mondes et les six expériences du bardo que définit la tradition bouddhique, Trungpa jette un regard pénétrant sur la folie présente dans nos tendances psychologiques habituelles et montre comment celles-ci offrent l'occasion de transmuer l'expérience quotidienne en liberté.
