Her Keeper is concerned by her unusual behaviour, and as Mae Jabu is led to a grassy clearing the children become aware that something very odd is occurring down on the shoreline. Mae Jabu gently lifts some of the smallest children on to her back and then heads for the safety of the higher ground, with the keeper and the older children running anxiously beside her. The gigantic wave rolls in but the children have been saved by Mae Jabu, whose ‘sixth sense’ anticipated the disaster. Vibrant illustrations and powerful text will see this book become a classic, a reminder of a miracle of survival in a terrible time.

Petit point dans l’océan Indien, Maurice recèle une riche histoire qui la place au carrefour du monde. C’est ce que propose de découvrir cette BD. Dans le Tome 1, deux jeunes mauriciens d’aujourd’hui rencontrent Simon van de Stel, premier homme dont la naissance a été déclarée dans cette île en 1639, fils d’un gouverneur hollandais et de la fille d’une esclave indienne. En sa compagnie, ils remontent jusqu’en 1598, après les premiers signalements de l’île par Arabes et Portugais, ouvrant sur la colonisation hollandaise puis française. Et les débuts d’une construction marquée notamment par l’esclavage. Dans le Tome 2, nos trois héros ont couvert la période allant de 1767 à 1885, avec le passage à la colonisation anglaise, l’abolition de l’esclavage, le développement de l’engagisme. Ce Tome 3 marque la consolidation démocratique démocratique de l’île. Au fil de l’éveil syndical et politique, on passe des premières élections de 1886 au tournant décisif de l’accession à l’indépendance en 1968. Voguant de la création de « communautés » au développement du « mauricianisme », en passant par les émeutes inter-ethniques de 1911 ou 1999. C’est au développement d’un pays complexe et dynamique, que certains vouaient à la faillite tant sociale qu’économique que l’on assiste ici. Un périple aventureux au sein de réalités souvent peu ou mal connues…
