Au commencement de l’histoire, il y a l’école, la maison, et le chemin qui les relie. Chaque soir un enfant, le lecteur, parcourt ce chemin et observe ce qui l’entoure. L’accumulation de ces observations, au fil des jours, rend le chemin plus long et plus compliqué, car de menus incidents, d’étranges rencontres, s’y produisent. Progressivement, les personnages croisés deviennent des protagonistes. Ainsi, l’inconnu croisé au début devient le héros qui devra affronter le monde de la sorcière pour sauver la reine…

It wasn't made like any other book either; Michael Rosen said of the text, " I wrote it at a moment of extreme feeling and it went straight down onto the page ... And Quentin Blake says that the picture of Michael "being sad but trying to look happy" is the most difficult drawing he's ever done... "a moving experience."
